Ladies and gentlemen, boy’s and girl’s children of all ages, what a start for the new format! Even better that the women got to kick off this piece of Cricketing history.
A real carnival atmosphere, great coverage and already bringing in new fans to the game and engaging multiple generations Cricket fan or not!
The tournament kicked off with Manchester Originals facing the Oval Invincibles who lead the charge with wins for Women’s and Men’s teams. Originals Kate Cross claimed the first ever 6 in the tournament for the ladies and the Invincibles Van Niekirk scoring the first ever fifty. In the Men’s tournament Sam Curran had the honour of the first 6 and Sam Billings missing out on scoring the first 50 by just 1 run!
So, what is a good score, and can we take any indication from the T20 Blast? In any limited overs the key is always knowing what score you feel comfortable chasing or defending for the wicket. Looking at T20 stats for 2021, the average winning score batting first at the Oval is 185 equating to approximately 1.5 runs per ball. The OI ladies chased 1.49 runs per ball and the men defended 1.45 runs per ball so already we can see how fine the margins are.
Tonight, and over the weekend there is more action on the way. Are there any clear favourites, who will be the heroes?
